What is ENT Endoscopy?

ENT Endoscopy is a non-surgical diagnostic method that uses a thin, flexible instrument fitted with a small high-definition camera – called an endoscope – to examine the internal structures of the ear canal, nasal passages, and throat. The procedure allows the doctor to view areas that are not visible through a standard clinical examination.

The images are displayed on a screen in real time, enabling the doctor to identify abnormalities, confirm diagnoses, and in some cases, show you what was found – so you leave the consultation with a clear picture of your health.

Key BenefitNo cuts, no stitches, no hospital admission – the procedure is done entirely in the clinic and takes between 5 and 15 minutes.

What to Expect During Your Visit

If you have never had an ENT endoscopy before, it is natural to have questions. Here is a step-by-step walkthrough of what happens during your appointment.

  • Consultation – Your doctor will begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history, and any relevant prior treatments. This helps determine the right type of endoscopy for your case.
  • Preparation – Depending on the area being examined, a mild nasal decongestant spray or a topical anaesthetic may be applied to ensure your comfort during the procedure.
  • The Procedure – The endoscope is gently guided into the nasal passage, throat, or ear canal. You will feel mild pressure at most. The entire examination takes between 5 and 15 minutes.
  • Real-Time Review – The camera feed is displayed on a monitor. Your doctor will walk you through the findings as the examination progresses, so you are not left guessing.
  • Diagnosis and Plan – Once the procedure is complete, the doctor will discuss the diagnosis with you, explain what was observed, and outline the recommended next steps – whether that is medication, a referral, or a follow-up visit.
Good to KnowNo fasting is required before a nasal or ear endoscopy. Your doctor will let you know in advance if any specific preparation is needed based on your procedure.

Who Should Consider an ENT Endoscopy?

You do not need to wait until your symptoms become severe. An endoscopy is recommended if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • A blocked or runny nose that has not improved despite medication for two weeks or more
  • Recurring sinus headaches or facial pressure
  • Unexplained changes in your voice or persistent hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing or a constant sensation of something stuck in the throat
  • Ear pain, ear discharge, or a gradual change in your hearing
  • Frequent nosebleeds without an obvious cause
  • Snoring or disturbed sleep suspected to be linked to nasal obstruction
  • A referral from your general physician or another specialist
