Upper GI Endoscopy
(Gastroscopy)

Accurate Diagnosis. Better Treatment.

Constant acidity, a burning feeling after meals, or that dull pain in the upper stomach that just won't go away, most people live with it for months before getting it checked. An upper GI endoscopy, also called gastroscopy, is usually the fastest way to actually find out what's causing it, instead of guessing with one medicine after another.

At Sayee Velan Clinic, Dr. Seshashayee performs upper GI endoscopy as a quick outpatient procedure. No overnight stay, no long prep, and results that tell you exactly what's going on inside your food pipe, stomach and the first part of the small intestine.

When Is Gastroscopy Recommended?

Persistent acidity or heartburn that does not respond to regular medication

Repeated vomiting, including vomiting with blood

Unexplained upper abdominal pain or bloating

Difficulty or pain while swallowing food

Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite

Suspected ulcers, gastritis or H. pylori infection

Follow-up after previous stomach or oesophagus treatment

How the Procedure Works

Doctor consulting patient pre-procedure
Before the Procedure

Come on an empty stomach after 6 to 8 hours of fasting. A brief consultation confirms your symptoms and medical history.

Endoscopy screening room operation setup
During the Procedure

A numbing throat spray and, when appropriate, mild sedation keep you comfortable. The scope examination usually takes only 5 to 10 minutes.

Patient happy and relaxing post recovery
After the Procedure

Rest briefly while sedation wears off, then go home the same day. Your findings and next steps are explained clearly, not just handed over as a report.

Is It Painful?

Most patients describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful, mainly a gag sensation for a few seconds. With sedation and a numbing throat spray, the procedure is far more tolerable than most people expect going in.

What is Upper GI Endoscopy?

Upper GI endoscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube with a camera at the tip is passed gently through the mouth to examine the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Live, magnified images let the doctor identify inflammation, ulcers, acidity damage and other abnormalities in real time.

A small tissue sample (biopsy) can be taken during the same procedure if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Patients Usually Ask Us

Is upper GI endoscopy painful?

It's generally not painful. With a numbing throat spray and mild sedation, most patients only feel brief discomfort during the procedure.

How long does the procedure take?

The scope itself usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. Including preparation and recovery time, the full visit is typically under an hour.

Do I need to fast before the test?

Yes, an empty stomach for about 6 to 8 hours is required for a clear, accurate examination.

When will I get my results?

Initial findings are usually discussed the same day. If a biopsy is taken, lab results may take a few additional days.

Is sedation compulsory for gastroscopy?

Not compulsory, but recommended for comfort. Some patients prefer to go through it without sedation, and that's discussed beforehand based on your preference.
